Foster Program

The Backyard Sanctuary knows it can be costly to help a needy animal. But, time doesn’t stop. And, litters keep coming.

Cats can have 3 litters each year - and shelters get full. At some point, shelters make the call to euthanize.

That is when rescues jump into action. Rescues first tag then pick up the animals on the red list.

Rescues tag if they have someone to foster this red listed animal.

This is where you come in.

How do you join the foster program?

First - Express interest by completing the foster application form or email us at tbs.cats1@gmail.com. Tell us about yourself and let’s start a conversation.

Then - if we both agree on the mission and our duties, then we sign the foster agreement.

Now - we find your foster!

Tell me about my foster kitten

Your foster kitty will likely come from San Joaquin County or Stanislaus County. Cats love it hot and the vast amount of farm land makes it an ideal hiding spot for ferals.

We support TNR (Trap Neuter Release) programs but this is how we help when the kittens have been born.

The first place we look at shelters like Stanislaus County Animal Services and Stockton City Animal Shelter. Once we are told of a kitten in need, that animal is tagged and a volunteer picks up from the shelter.

In some cases, we have hours from the time we hear about an animal who has been dropped off to closing time (around 5PM). If that animal is not picked up (around 4PM) it is at risk of being put down. Yes, its dramatic and VERY stressful.

Sometimes, we are on Facebook groups and we hear about a kitten found. In either case, these babies need care.

The Backyard Sanctuary is able to take neonates (birth to 4 weeks) where they live in an incubator. Kittens older than 4 weeks do not require an incubator but should be kept warm.

ANYWAYS - when the finder is able to coordinate a volunteer pickup at the shelter - that baby is on its way to you.

Tell me about my foster cat

Our adult cats are either given up or never found a home. Sometimes, we may not know the story but the cat distribution system is at play here too. No judgement - just love. We’re here to find these kitties love and human companionship, forever.
